Well this week started out hopeful with my idea of creating a 3D transformer to stand on top of my little cousins birthday cake. I’ve never attempted to make anything like this before but felt hopeful with all that I have seen on the cake shows. First I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a Transformer figurine, since I had no idea what they look like anymore and I could use it to double as my cousins gift.
I started out making a batch of rice crispy treats using the Original Recipe from the Rice Krisy’s site found here. Before I added the actual rice krispys I crushed them in a Ziploc bag as suggested by many others online. This method helps to make the treats more dense. I began forming my guy over some dowel rods and came up with this.
The next day I started rolling out my fondant to cover him with and that’s when the real trouble began. Lesson learned here is to roll out enough to cover him entirely or at least all of one side so that the seam runs in one direction all the way around his body. After adding details I realized that one batch of treats wasn’t enough since I was having to use the fondant to ‘build up’ the details of his body. My husband mentioned that he looked to rounded off.
Next time I will make two batches of the treats so that I can carve my figure down and into the desired shape. I will admit that I did not have a plan and just went for it, which was probably my first mistake! :) So now it was on to figuring out Plan B and tossing this guy in the garbage.
As I rummaged through internet images I finally decided to just stick with the logo. I printed out a copy of the logo on a normal sheet of paper and cut out the pieces using an exact-o knife. I rolled out a sheet of blue fondant and cut the pieces a little larger than the paper cut out then rolled out a sheet of red fondant and cut them the same size as the paper cut outs. They were still pretty stick from the warmth of my hands so I didn’t have to use any water to adhere them together (normally you would just dabble some water on the back of the top layer). Here is what I came up with.
The next step is baking the cake and figuring out the color of icing. To me this image doesn’t seem to ‘exciting’ so I chose to give the cake a multi colored marble look. To do this you just make a white cake mix and split it into the number of bowls you want colors for and dye using food color gel. You pour them into the center of your pan directly on top of one another. This is mine as it went into the oven….
To be continued….
